RX Radio is a radio station– run by and for children - at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The initiative aims to create a platform for communication between hospitalised children, their families, and the health services by providing patients with the skills and support to produce and broadcast radio programmes across the hospital. In addition, we are a project initiated under the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Facility Board.

Chelsey Daniels started at RX Radio as a Public Relations and Marketing Intern in 2020 as part of her 3rd year internship programme. She has gained some experience in writing, admin duties and fundraising. In 2021 she has become the Junior Project Officer for the station. Her job involves maintaining our good office space and she enjoys interacting with others and meeting new people.
She is chatting to us about #MakeYourSummerCount Campaign which is an effort to unlock people’s summer by donating to RX Radio, this campaign looks at bringing everyone together to try and keep children’s voices on air.

Kamiel Singh is SABMR's Sustainability Portfolio Manager. His role is to make sure the doctors, donors and patients receive funds through financial projects that communicate vision. The focus of this interview is the National Save a Life Raffle that SABMR is doing, which aims to cover the donor-related costs of three patients, mainly children, who are currently on their waiting list for bone marrow stem cell transplants.

In light of Organ Donor Month, Talitha is talking to Zaahier Isaacs, the Head the Patient Services Department at the South African Bone Marrow Registry. A typical day at the office for him involves responding to new search requests for patients, which must be completed and reported within 24 hours. Zaahier has a strong interest for Life Sciences. This interest began in 1985 at age 15 when his mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma and was given only three months to live.

Lebo Diverse is a self-published author of an anthology titled Pieces of Expressions. The book stems from a place of a drowning young person who felt suicidal. However, their spirit refused to leave earth without leaving something behind.
The book was meant to be a parting gift to the world that turned into a birth certificate and Lebo is the living testimony. Pieces of Expression proves the power of Publish – when Lebo as battling with the conflict of publish or perish, publishing prevailed. Lebo is also co-developing an annual collective publication titled “Imagining a Queer and Black Institution” where black queers from around the globe share their stories.

In studio with Yusrah and Naseerah is Nuraan Samuels an Oral Hygienist. She grew up in Mitchell's plain Cape Town and is a proud alumna of the University of the Western Cape where she graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health degree in 2022. Nuraan has been working at Red Cross Hospital since April this year and passionate about providing Oral Health care to children. She joined us to talk about #NationalOralHealthMonth.

Angel Campey is a stand-up comedian that broke into the comedy scene in 2011 on Long Street, Cape Town. She has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Kings and Queens of Comedy” multiple times, she has performed at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival, and toured to New York City in 2016, performing on some of the most famous comedy stages in the world including a trip to the JFL Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada. In 2015 Angel was nominated by the South African Department of Arts and Culture for an Mbokodo Award, recognising women changing the game in their industries, for Comedy. Angel joined Smile 90.4FM in 2017, and currently she co-hosts The JoyRide with Angel Campey.

Emily is speaking to Jenny Wright the CEO of Milk Matters. She joined Milk Matters in 2005 in order to assist with running Milk Matters, a small but growing and developing organisation. Jenny’s desire to get involved in breastfeeding support was sparked by seeing far too many distressed mothers giving up breastfeeding because of a lack of adequate support and information.

Kendahl Benting is a 13-year-old RX Radio reporter who completed the RX Radio Basic Training 2021. She was recently awarded an opportunity to watch the opening game of the recent Netball World Cup where South Africa took on Wales. This world cup was quite special because it was the first one to be hosted in Africa.
