RX Radio is a radio station– run by and for children - at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The initiative aims to create a platform for communication between hospitalised children, their families, and the health services by providing patients with the skills and support to produce and broadcast radio programmes across the hospital. In addition, we are a project initiated under the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Facility Board.

To help us celebrate 100 years of radio in South Africa is Nancy Richards, a former independent journalist with a good few years experience on radio and in print. As a radio presenter, areas of specialisation included shows on literature, the environment and ‘women’s issues’. In print she’s covered environment matters, books and literature, lifestyle, travel and décor amongst other things. She has a podcast called Books Stories People and is founder of an NPO: Women Zone Cape Town and The Women’s Library at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town.

Sibongile Nkete completed her Matric in 2018 at Cunningham High School in the Eastern Cape where she was the top achiever and also the President of the school. Currently she works as a Financial Advisor and Community Careworker for Triangle Project.

Qaqamba is a young RX Radio reporter and Board member. She used to host a show called Qaqamba’s Inspiration Corner where she interviewed a variety of people with the aim to motivate and inspire others. Currently, Qaqamba is registered for a Masters in Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
Last year she took part in the Cape Town Marathon where she was pushed in a buggy by Alan Jacobs to contribute to RX Radio’s sustainability. On the 10th of March this year she will once again venture on raising funds for the station through the Cycle Tour.

Sebastian is joined by Phil McLean to talk about World Wetlands Day. He is a Botanist working with the Western Cape Government for the last 6 years, and in various forms for government for another 10 before that. He started with the Western Cape as an Environmental Law Enforcement officer (Environmental Police) and now works for the Water Sector in pollution management, where rivers and wetlands are his specialty.

Razia has organised for Ettienne Wilsnagh to pull Qaqamba Cuba in a buggy at the Cape town Cycle Tour on the 10th of March 2024 to raise funds for the station. Ettienne is the Franchise Principal for Alchemy Financial Services. When he saw a young disabled child being towed in the 2015 Cycle tour while doing his very first event, he knew that this is how he wants to ride this event in the future.

Paxton Fielies is a South African singer, songwriter and aspiring philanthropist. She rose to fame in 2017, after winning the 13th season of Idols South Africa. She is the youngest South African female person to win the title. Since then she has made her mark on the industry and isn’t slowing down anytime soon, as she recently released her latest Album 23:23 which features artist like Shekhinah and Majorsteez This collection of songs is a her reflection and diary through music and shares a piece of her hometown with us as she includes Nooitgedacht New Apostolic Children’s Choir where she first started her journey.

Sinesipho Peter is a Cape Town based hip hop artist with the stage name Bravo Le Roux WP. Bravo Le Roux believes in art and does his music with passion, shakes the crowd when performing. He has performed in major events such as ipotsoyi, ikasi experience, Ivyson Tour and ubumnandi festival. BravoLe Roux has been an artist since growing up, from drawing, painting, dancing and music. His Igazi, linyembezi Nombilo Album which is translated as Blood, Sweat and Tears was released in June 2023. He is getting ready to headline one of the most popular festival Cotton fest and also recently performed at the Springboks Trophy Tour after their victory at the Rugby World Cup.

Jill Fortuin qualified as a surf lifeguard in 1993. She has a Bachelors in Oral Health from the University of the Western Cape, a Master’s degree in eHealthcare and Telemedicine at the University of Queensland and a Doctorate of Philosophy from UWC. She also contributed her expertise to the Ministerial Advisory Committee on eHealth at the National Department of Health. Combining her extensive knowledge and experience from academia and her lifeguard background, Jill now dedicates herself to advancing Drowning Prevention initiatives in South Africa and beyond.
